DESTINATION INFORMATION

Battambang, Cambodia’s second-largest city is the confluence of progress and tradition that blends perfectly together, giving tourists a best-of-both-worlds experience. Stepping into Battambang is akin to stepping back in time due to its well-preserved colonial architecture and its ancient temples and Buddhist shrines.

There’s no such thing as a lonely traveler in this city as almost every space is decorated with statues, the most prominent of which is the legendary Dambang Krognuing. The city center is easily walkable and houses most of the interesting sites, namely the art-deco Psar Nat and Central Market. Other famous attractions are the Governor’s Residence and the Battambang Museum. Along streets 1, 2, and 3 are a mix of Chinese, French, and Italian architecture which is a visual feast. If tourists are looking for something more local and unique to the city, they can hop aboard the country’s only working train services – the Bamboo Railway.

One should also take time to explore the Phnom Sampeu Mountain which also houses the Killing Caves of the Khmer Rouge; and the Wat Banan which is one of the best-preserved temples in the area. Battambang might be on its way to becoming the country’s second UNESCO World Heritage Site which will bring in the hordes of tourists so best to visit before it gets too packed.
